The UK Government does not yet believe in public that organic produce has any benefits over high density or intensive farming apart from reducing the intake of residue pesticides & additives Latest News nor does the UK Government believe that there are any risks to humans or the environment in the use of GM (Genetically Modified) food Latest News Interestingly though, the UK Government does allow manufactures’ & producers in the food industry to modify the things we eat with wide range of artificial preservatives, colourings, flavourings, enhancers, emulsifiers, thickeners & stabilizers to name but a few Latest News
Frighteningly, the official Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of a single food additive is worked out on the basis that it is safe to consume 1 milligram per kilo of body weight, daily over a life time. That means if you weigh 10 stone, it is fine to eat just over 23 kilograms of each and every single food additive each and every year of your adult life – and there are over 1500 approved to consume additives for food in this country!!! Thankfully we do not believe every thing that we are told and even a modicum of common sense that tells us that it would be foolhardy to consume a small mountain of additives in our lifetime.
Where should we shop?
I grow my own seasonal herbs, fruit and vegetables on an allotment and buy meat, fish, pulses, grains & dairy produce from my local farmers markets.
If I can't get to the markets then in Beckenham & Bromley there’s M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Tesco & Lidl representing the major supermarkets, plus 30 or so Box Delivery Schemes that will delivery fresh, organic seasonal food straight to my door-step. In addition there are a number of specialist butchers and smaller suppliers of fresh produce – enough to choose from to source good quality food.
My humble opinion is that it just makes sense to eat organic food whenever you can afford to but regardless, you should always look for food that has no (or as few as possible) artificial additives listed as ingredients
